Investigating the difficulties faced by employees in accessing information about careers in Saudi Arabia

1. Introduction

The issue of career has been subject to various studies in the recent past. As defined by the oxford dictionary, it is a person’s “course or progress through life (or a distinct portion of life)”. It is normally viewed as a sequence of stages through which an individual passes during the course of his/her life. In general, a career is considered to span the period from the time an individual enters the workforce until he/she retires.

There are different approaches to careers. One approach sees a career as a linear progression through a series of jobs or occupations. Another approach sees careers as more complex, with multiple pathways and multiple roles over time. This latter approach is sometimes known as “career latticing” or “career webbing”.

In Saudi Arabia, careers are mostly associated with the private sector. The Saudi government has been encouraging citizens to join the private sector in order to participate in the country’s development and diversification plans.
