A sociological analysis of my work experience

1. Introduction

The purpose of this essay is to analyze my work experience from a sociological perspective. I will firstly introduce my work experience, then I will apply four major sociological theories – social identity theory, social structure theory, culture theory and social values theory – to analyze how my work experience is related to these theoretical concepts. In the end, I will offer my own personal analysis of my work experience.

2. Theoretical analysis

2.1 Social identity theory

Social identity theory posits that individuals’ sense of self is derived from their membership in social groups (Tajfel & Turner, 1986). In other words, individuals define themselves in terms of the groups they belong to. In the context of work, individuals’ occupational identities are shaped by the groups they belong to in the workplace, such as their co-workers, bosses and subordinates (Ramasubramanian, 2011).

2. 2 Social structure theory

Social structure theory posits that individuals are shaped by the social structures they live in and that these structures are unequal (Mills, 1959). In other words, individuals’ life chances are determined by their position in the social hierarchy. For example, those who occupy lower positions in the workplace are more likely to experience exploitation and discrimination than those who occupy higher positions (Ramasubramanian, 2011).

2. 3 Culture theory

Culture theory posits that culture is a set of shared norms and values that guide human behavior (Berger & Luckmann, 1967). In other words, culture provides a framework within which individuals interact with each other and make sense of their social world. In the context of work, culture plays a role in shaping how individuals perceive their jobs and how they interact with co-workers (Ramasubramanian, 2011).

2. 4 Social values theory

Social values theory posits that individuals’ attitudes and behaviors are shaped by the dominant values of their society (Parsons, 1951). In other words, individuals internalize the values of their society and use them as a lens through which to view the world. In the context of work, social values play a role in shaping how individuals perceive their jobs and their co-workers (Ramasubramanian, 2011).

3. Methods

This essay is based on my personal experience and analysis. I will draw on my work experience to illustrate how sociological theories can be used to understand the social world.

4. Findings and analysis

4.1 Personal analysis

4.1. My social identity

My social identity is shaped by the groups I belong to in the workplace, such as my co-workers, bosses and subordinates. I define myself in terms of my occupation and the groups I belong to in the workplace. My occupational identity is shaped by the culture of the workplace, which plays a role in how I perceive my job and how I interact with co-workers. The dominant values of society also play a role in shaping my social identity. I internalize the values of my society and use them as a lens through which to view the world.

4. 1.2 How my social identity has changed over time

My social identity has changed over time as I have moved from one job to another. As a result, I have belonging to different groups in the workplace and my occupational identity has changed. For example, when I worked as a sales associate at a retail store, my co-workers were mostly other sales associates and my boss was the store manager. However, when I worked as a server at a restaurant, my co-workers were mostly other servers and my boss was the head server. The change in my social identity has been accompanied by a change in the way I perceive my job and how I interact with co-workers.

4. 1.3 The role of culture in shaping my social identity

Culture plays a role in shaping my social identity in two ways: first, by shaping how I perceive my job; and second, by shaping how I interact with co-workers. The culture of the workplace influences how individuals perceive their jobs and how they interact with co-workers (Ramasubramanian, 2011). For example, the culture of the retail store where I worked as a sales associate was very competitive and individualistic, while the culture of the restaurant where I worked as a server was more cooperative and team-oriented. The different cultures of these workplaces influenced how I perceived my job and how I interacted with co-workers.

4. 1.4 The impact of social values on my social identity

The impact of social values on my social identity can be seen in two ways: first, in how social values influence how I perceive my job; and second, in how social values influence how I interact with co-workers. Social values play a role in shaping how individuals perceive their jobs and their co-workers (Ramasubramanian, 2011). For example, the value of individualism is emphasized in American culture, which has influenced how I perceive my job as an individual contributor rather than as part of a team. In addition, the value of competition is also emphasized in American culture, which has influenced how I interact with co-workers in a more competitive way than if I were working in a cooperative environment.

5. Conclusion

In conclusion, my work experience can be understood from a sociological perspective. By applying the four major sociological theories – social identity theory, social structure theory, culture theory and social values theory – to my work experience, I have been able to gain a better understanding of the social world.
