The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) is a national trade union center in the United States. It was created in 1955 through the merger of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) and the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO). As of 2018, it had 56 member unions representing 12.5 million workers.
The AFL-CIO’s major goals are “to improve the lives of working families” with the sole mission of providing them with “economic justice” at their workplace. The organization strives to achieve these goals by lobbying for pro-labor legislation at the state and federal level, fighting against unfair labor practices, and running training and placement programs to help its members find good jobs. In addition, the AFL-CIO provides numerous other services to its members, such as talent development and discrimination prevention programs
