The paper examines the verse narrative Gilgamesh by Herbert Mason in an attempt to provide personal opinion on the challenges that Gilgamesh faces in his pursuit for recognition. Gilgamesh was a historical figure, who was king of the ancient Mesopotamian city-state of Uruk. The epic poem, Gilgamesh, King of Uruk, is about his life and exploits. The challenges that Gilgamesh faces throughout the poem are both physical and psychological.
2. Themes and challenges in “Gilgamesh King of Uruk”:
One of the main themes in the poem is death and immortality. Gilgamesh is afraid of death and wants to find a way to become immortal. He goes on a long journey to find a plant that will make him young again but he does not find it. Instead, he learns that mortality is inevitable and that he should make the most of his life while he can.
Another theme is power and control. Gilgamesh has great powers as king but he abuses them. He oppresses his people and rapes women. He also tries to control everything in his kingdom including nature. When he kills Humbaba, the guardian of the Cedar Forest, he upsets the gods and they punish him by taking away his best friend Enkidu.
Enkidu is another important theme in the poem. He is like a brother or alter ego to Gilgamesh. They have many adventures together including fighting Humbaba and killing the Bull of Heaven. Enkidu’s death is a turning point for Gilgamesh and he becomes obsessed with finding a way to avoid death himself.
Love is another theme in the poem. Gilgamesh loves Enkidu but when Enkidu dies, Gilgamesh’s love turns to obsession. He also has a brief affair with Ishtar, the goddess of love, but it ends badly when she tries to have him killed. In the end, Gilgamesh learns that love is fleeting and that death is inevitable but he still tries to find a way to cheat death.

Gilgamesh, King of Uruk is a classic epic poem about a hero’s journey. Gilgamesh faces many challenges both physical and psychological in his quest for immortality.
