The purpose of this paper is to analyze how the relationship between religion and politics has changed over time. In order to do this, the paper will first look at how religion and politics were related in the ancient period. Next, it will examine how the relationship changed during the Roman Empire. After that, the paper will discuss how the relationship changed during the 5th century when Christianity began to challenge government authority. Finally, the paper will examine two key figures in American history, Thomas Jefferson and Roger Williams, who helped shape the separation of church and state in America.
2. Politics and Religion in the Ancient Period:
In the ancient period, religion played a very important role in society and was often used to preserve social structures. Religion was used to legitimize the authority of rulers and to maintain social cohesion. Rulers often claimed that they had been chosen by the gods or that they had divine power.
