The Political Landscape of California

1. Introduction

California is one of the most populous states in the United States and due to this fact it plays a very critical role in major elections especially presidential bids. The state has 55 electoral votes which is more than double than what any other state has. In the 2016 presidential elections, California was one of the states that clinched Hillary Clinton the democratic nomination. The state has been a stronghold for the Democratic Party for quite some time now. However, this does not mean that the Republican Party does not have any presence in California. There are actually two major political parties in California- the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. There are also numerous smaller political parties in California but these two are the most dominant ones.

2. Political parties in California

The Republican Party is one of the two major political parties in California. The party’s roots in California can be traced back to 1849 when it was founded during the first ever statewide election which saw Peter Burnett being elected as the first governor of California. The party actually played a very critical role in California’s admission into the Union as one of the US states. The party initially had a very strong presence in California but this started declining in the late 19th century as the state became more populated and urbanized. The party’s vote share started declining and by 1911, it only had 22 percent of the statewide vote share. This trend continued until 1966 when Ronald Reagan was elected as the Governor of California on a Republican ticket. He is credited with reviving the party’s fortunes in California.

The Democratic Party is the other major political party in California. The party has its roots in 1847 when it was founded by Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo and other Californios who were opposed to US annexation of California. The party initially had very little success electorally but this started changing from 1911 onwards when Hiram Johnson was elected as the Governor of California on a Democratic ticket. The party continued to grow in strength and by 2014, it had a majority in both houses of the state legislature- something that it still enjoys to date.

3. The role of Californian voters in local and state politics

Californian voters play a very critical role in both local and state politics. In terms of voting, Californians have always had high turnout levels especially during presidential elections. In 2008 for instance, 63 percent of eligible Californians voted which was higher than the national average of 61 percent. However, turnout levels have generally been declining over time and this trend continued in 2016 when only 60 percent of eligible Californians voted which was lower than both the national and state averages.

In terms of referenda, Californians have also played a very critical role over the years given that they have always been willing to use this process to enact change whenever they feel that their elected representatives are not doing enough. A good example is Proposition 8 which was passed by Californians in 2008 and resulted in same-sex marriage being banned in the state. However, this decision was later overturned by the US Supreme Court on constitutional grounds.
