Macedo’s Educational Views: Validity and Relevance in Today’s World

1. Introduction

In this essay, I will be discussing the educational views of Donald Macedo. Macedo is a Professor Emeritus of English and Luso-American Studies at the University of Massachusetts Boston. In his book “Literacies of Power”, Macedo discusses five themes that are prejudice, political correctness, poisonous pedagogy, language, and multiculturalism (Macedo, 1999). I will be discussing how these themes are still relevant today and why Macedo’s views on education are valid.

2. Macedo’s Educational Views

Macedo’s educational views are valid because they reflect the interest of all groups with respect to political, economic and racial groups. Macedo believes that American education should adopt a transformative model which is based on social justice (Macedo, 2001). This means that all students should have an equal opportunity to succeed in school regardless of their background. Macedo also believes that we need to address the big lies that have been told about American education such as “separate but equal” or ” colorblindness” (Macedo, 2001). These lies have allowed for discrimination against certain groups of people based on their race, gender, or class.

3. The Five Themes in Macebo’s Book Literacies of Power

The five themes covered in Macebo’s book Literacies of Power are prejudice, political correctness, poisonous pedagogy, language, and multiculturalism (Macedo, 1999). These themes are still relevant today because they allow us to see how power is used to oppress certain groups of people. For example, the theme of prejudice is relevant today because there is still discrimination against minorities in American society. The theme of political correctness is also relevant because there has been a recent pushback against it from the Trump administration. The theme of poisonous pedagogy is relevant because there are still many teachers who use harmful methods of teaching such as using fear or shame to motivate students. The theme of language is relevant because we are still debating about which languages should be taught in schools. Lastly, the theme of multiculturalism is relevant because we are still debating about how to best promote cultural diversity in our schools.

4. Mindlessness and Lack of attention

Mindlessness is when we go through the motions of something without really paying attention to what we are doing (Macedo, 2001). Lack of attention is when we do not pay enough attention to something and this can lead to mindlessness. Mindlessness can also lead to automatic performance where we do something without really thinking about it (Macedo, 2001). Automatic performance can be harmful because it can lead to mistakes being made. For example, if a doctor is mindlessly going through the motions of performing surgery, they may make a mistake that could cost someone their life.

5. Mindfulness and Automatic Performance

Mindfulness is when we pay attention to what we are doing in the present moment (Macedo, 2001). We need to be mindful in order to avoid mindlessness and automatic performance. Being mindful can help us catch mistakes before they happen and it can also help us improve our concentration. For example, if a doctor is mindful while performing surgery, they are more likely to catch any mistakes that they might make.

6. Reform in American Education

There has been a lot of reform in American education in recent years but there is still more that needs to be done. For example, we need to continue to work towards creating equal opportunities for all students regardless of their background. We also need to address the big lies that have been told about American education and continue to promote cultural diversity in our schools.
