Different Views on the English-Powhatan Relationship in Early Colonial America

1. Introduction

It is a well-known fact that different historians can have quite opposite views on the events that took place in one and the same area, at one and the same time. This is especially true for the early years of the colonization of America when the Europeans were not yet familiar with the local cultures and customs. In this essay, we will take a closer look at three different viewpoints on the relationships between the Englishmen and the Powhatans that lived in Virginia in 1608-1610. These are John Smith’s “A True Relation of Such Occurrences and Accidents of Noate as Hath Hapned in Virginia”, The General History of Virginia, New-England, and the Summer Isles by Captain John Smith, and The True Travels, Adventures, and Observations of Captain John Smith by John Smith.

2. John Smith’s View of the Powhatans

In his “A True Relation”, Smith paints a rather hostile picture of the Powhatans. He describes them as “a rude and barbarous people”, “unnatural enemies”, and “treacherous”. He accuses them of being responsible for the death of many Englishmen through poisonings and other means. He also claims that they constantly tried to negotiate with the English in order to get goods from them while at the same time secretly planning to attack them.

Smith also has a negative opinion of Powhatan himself whom he calls a “tyrrant”. He claims that Powhatan tried to take away his leadership skills by putting him in a position where he was submissive to him. However, Smith ultimately manages to escape from this situation and return to England.

3. The Powhatans’ View of John Smith

The Powhatans’ view of John Smith is much more positive than Smith’s view of them. They praise him for his leadership skills and describe him as a good friend. They also claim that he was helpful to them during difficult times.

4. Conclusion

As we can see, there is a big difference between the way John Smith and the Powhatans view each other. While Smith paints a negative picture of the Powhatans, they have a very positive opinion of him. This shows us that history is always written from a particular point of view and that it is important to consider all sides before forming our own opinion.
