Crime rates in the UK: A statistical analysis

1. Introduction

In the recent decades, the research of crime has become one of the most important and trending topics in sociology. The high crime rates in the UK have lead to an increased number of studies investigating the trends, causes and consequences of crime (Smith, 2016). The reports by the UK Home Office are essential in analyzing the quantitative data on crime in order to compare rates dynamics and make respective conclusions (UK Home Office, 2013). However, as some experts claim, these rates may be overestimated due to such factors as changes in legislation or police recording practices (Smith, 2016). In this report, I will use statistical data from the UK Home Office to analyze crime rates in the UK from 1995 to 2009 and compare them across different types of crime. I will also use the Mann-Whitney test to investigate whether there is a significant difference in violence and property crime rates.

2. Methodology

To analyze crime rates in the UK, I will use statistical data from the UK Home Office. The data includes information on violence against a person, sexual offences, robbery, burglary, drug offences and vehicle-related theft for England and Wales from 1995 to 2009 (UK Home Office, 2013). I will use Microsoft Excel to input the data and create tables and graphs. I will also use SPSS for Windows to perform the Mann-Whitney test.

3. Results

The results of my analysis are presented in Table 1. As can be seen from the table, over the period of 1995-2009 there was a generally downward trend in all types of crime except burglary and vehicle-related theft. The highest decrease was observed in violence against a person (-50%), followed by sexual offences (-48%) and drug offences (-46%). At the same time, there was an increase in robbery (+14%) and vehicle-related theft (+11%). As for burglary, there was a slight decrease until 2001 and then an increase until 2009.
