8. Milton Snavely Hershey
Milton Snavely Hershey was born on September 13th, 1857 in Derry Township, Pennsylvania. He was the fourth child of Henry and Fannie Roach Hershey. When he was eight years old his family moved to a farm near Hummelstown where he attended school until he was thirteen. He then began working odd jobs to help support his family. In 1876 he became an apprentice candy maker in a Lancaster caramel factory owned by Joseph Royer. Royer taught Hershey everything he knew about making candy. In 1883 Hershey opened his own candy business called Lancaster Caramel Company. He soon became very successful and began to experiment with new recipes for chocolate candies (Hershey Timeline).
